The Shadow of Your Wings

Because You have been my help, therefore in the
shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.

-- Psalm 63:7 (NKJV)

Throughout nature, a mother protects her child. She stays close, warding off enemies, giving comfort, sharing her warmth. A mother bird will gather her babies to her, sheltering them beneath her wings, keeping them safe from all danger.

The Psalms are filled with passages acknowledging the mighty works of God, singing His praises, giving thanks for all He gives us. In this moving verse the Psalmist compares God to a mother bird, safeguarding her young in the shadow of her wings. He admits that God has held him up when he was weak, has assisted him in trials, has protected him from foes and perils, has sheltered him in His loving hands. And because of all this, for thanks of all of this, the Psalmist rejoices.

Praise God and rejoice! For He shelters us beneath His mighty wings.

Father, thank You for being our help, our strength, our refuge. We pray that You always protect us and keep us safe within the shadow of Your wings. May we forever rejoice. Amen.
